Note 01 · The chemistry, honestly

What a ceramic coating actually does.

Marketing copy makes ceramic coating sound like magic. The honest version is more interesting and less impressive. Here's what the chemistry actually does, what it protects against, and what no coating in the world can do.

The honest version

Five things to know before paying for one.

A ceramic coating is a thin layer of silica that chemically bonds to the clear coat on your car. That's it. Not magic, not paint, not a wax replacement, not bulletproof. What follows is what it actually does and what it doesn't.

01

The bond is chemical, not physical

Wax and sealant sit on top of the clear coat and wash off over weeks. A ceramic coating's silica molecules cross-link into the clear coat's surface, forming a much harder layer that's chemically part of the paint, not a film sitting on it. That's why a real ceramic lasts years where a sealant lasts months.

02

What it blocks

UV degradation (the slow fade and oxidation that kills factory paint). Chemical contamination (bird droppings, tree sap, water-spot mineral etching, road grime). Most of the very fine surface marring from a clay bar or contact wash. Hydrophobic behaviour means water and dirt slide off rather than sit and bake on.

03

What it doesn't block

Rock chips. Deep scratches. Door dings. Anything kinetic that breaks the surface goes straight through the coating into the clear coat or paint underneath. The coating is hard but it's microns thick. Anyone selling ceramic as "scratch-proof" is selling fiction.

04

Lifespan is conditional, not absolute

A 5-Year coating doesn't fail at year five. A 10-Year coating doesn't fail at year ten. Both degrade gradually depending on how the car is washed, where it's parked, and how often it gets contaminated. Garaged daily-driver with proper wash technique: lifespan goes long. Left under a tree, automatic car wash twice a month: lifespan goes short. The number is a manufacturer indication, not a guarantee.

05

The honest comparison

Compared to wax: ceramic lasts 20-50 times longer and blocks chemical contamination wax can't touch. Compared to a paint sealant: ceramic is harder, more chemical-resistant, and lasts longer. Compared to paint protection film: ceramic is much cheaper but doesn't block rock chips. Different tools, different jobs. Don't let anyone sell you ceramic as a substitute for PPF on a high-impact-risk vehicle, or PPF as a substitute for ceramic on a daily driver. They do different things.

Want the workshop version

Two coating options.

A1 runs 5-Year and 10-Year ceramic options. Both quoted to the car. Full paint decontamination + polish + paint enhancement comes with either tier because the coating only locks in what's underneath.
